OyerepaqFM saga: A Plus, Nana Ya Brefo disagree with Kumasi Traditional Council

A journalist for Angel FM, Nana Yaa Brefo, has voiced her opposition to a recent "order" by the Kumasi Traditional Authority to shut down a radio station with its headquarters in Kumasi.

Despite being Ashanti to boot, she stated on the Friday, August 26 broadcast of the Angel Morning Show that she disapproved with a move that would affect the livelihood of defenseless workers.

She highlighted the need to seek recourse through established legal avenues in order to address the outrageous charges made against the Council by a commentator on Oyerepa FM.

A Plus, a media personality, claimed that if all traditional authority emulated the leadership style of the Kumasi chiefs, the nation would quickly become unruly.

If a media outlet is shut down by the Ga Traditional Council or the Volta Regional House of Chiefs because it has been accused of a crime on its platform,

While it has been widely reported in the media that the chiefs ordered the station to be shut down, Sanaahene, the chief in charge of the Manhyia Palace in the absence of Otumfuo, has clarified that the meeting with representatives of Oyerepa FM on August 25, 2022 ended with advice to close the station, not an order as has been widely reported.

In an interview with Accra-based Happy FM on August 26, 2022, Samanhene Nana Osei Kweku said that the station's proprietors had been requested to suspend operations by a group of chiefs headed by the Bantamahene.

Since Ashanti Region is not Ghana, their license is still in effect, and they are free to conduct business anywhere, he said.

Speaking on Oyerepa FM a few weeks ago, politician and businessman Akwasi Adai, alias Odike, accused the chiefs and traditional authorities in the area of being complicit in illegal mining, which was depleting water bodies and forest resources.

He urged the youth to rebel and made threats to plan a sizable street demonstration against the chiefs.

In response to the remarks, the chiefs of the Kumasi Traditional Council also carried out a ritual in which they killed a ram and declared Odike to be unwelcome at Manhyia.

A few days after the rituals, unidentified assailants assaulted the party's regional headquarters, shooting into the building and smashing vehicles owned by Odike that were parked outside.
